Have Lunch With The Fairies – DIY Fairy Gardens

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I’m certainly not what you would call a crafty person. I can sew, and I have made a few craft items but generally speaking, I couldn’t craft my way out of a wet paper bag. However, when I first saw pictures of “Fairy Gardens” I fell in “a lot of like” and decided that I was going to make one.

Luckily they are easy to make, can adapt to anyone’s creative ideas and don’t cost much. All of these points are imperative for me.

There are undoubtedly numerous official instructions on the web on how to properly create a Fairy Garden, but I’m going to tell you how I did it. The reason for this is because I always do things the simplest way, the cheapest way and in this case, everything worked out great!

Materials Needed:

  1. Inexpensive clay (or breakable or already broken pots) At least one should be a large one.
  2. Inexpensive small bag of soil or just use soil from your garden.
  3. Small growing flowers and greenery that is well suited for the conditions of where your Fairy Garden will live (i.e. sunny or shade plants) or the easiest is dollar store artificial slight petal flowers and greenery. A little goes a long way.
  4. Decorative trinkets. Here use your imagination. I went to my dollar store and picked up some marbles, tiny pebbles, little fake birds, a couple of small houses, a bag of moss, Remember anything goes, it’s your creation.

Creating Your Fairy Garden:

  1. Take your largest pot and fill it partially with soil. Then start slotting in pieces of the other broken pots to create levels. Add more soil as needed to hold these levels in place. You can even build stairs if you like. This step will take some fiddling around until you like the basic form. Just relax and be creative.
  2. Next, you can go either way first. If you have houses or other larger items, I suggest you position them first. Work from the largest items down. In turn, if your flowers and greenery are the largest items plant them first. Put them where the biggest open spaces seem to be.
  3. Now for the decorating. Start filling in, accenting, decorating and beautifying with all of your other items. There is no set arrangement, go with what looks nice to you.
  4. Congratulations! You have just created a Fairy Garden.

Now if you’re like me, you’ll be fiddling with it for a couple of days, but that’s fine. Overall, pat yourself on the back and relax and admire how crafty you just became.

If you have kids, they’ll think you’re a genius. Let me know how it all turns out; I’d love to hear.
