I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing; My Place Of Well.

A Place in the World that’s mine?

Although I’ve lived here, in Canada, for decades now it doesn’t feel like my place. England, where I was born, or Costa Rica, where I lived for awhile before coming to Canada, resonate more with who I feel I am.

But certain songs help me remember and revisit places in my heart that bring joy and treasured memories.

In September 1998 Aerosmith released a song called I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing. My first daughter was also born in Sept. 1998 and for me, this song’s words spoke volumes.

“I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While you’re far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure

[Chorus]
Don’t want to close my eyes
I don’t want to fall asleep
Cause I’d miss you, baby
And I don’t wanna miss a thing
Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
I’d still miss you, baby
And I don’t want to miss a thing…”

When I first heard those words, I felt that they spoke perfectly to how I felt towards my baby daughter. Although the song is intended as a love song, it resonated with my new found love as a Mother.

I sang it to her many times in the car when we were out.

Now to completely switch genres.

More recently, there’s a song, which was introduced to me by a friend, that brings me to a beautiful place of peace. Although it’s a Christan song, the way the song flows and the beautiful voice of Kristene DiMarco are what really move me.

My favourite lines from this song are,

And it is well with my soul…”
It is well with my soul…”

These lines provoke a wonderful feeling of calm, comfort, and strength for me. Which is a welcome relief since serenity is something that has been a bit scarce the last few years.

What more could you possibly ask from a song?

  1. Beautiful photos Amanda. I so get how you can feel strongly about music at important times, and how a particular song resonates. When the boy-child was tiny, the song that most soothed him was The Mamas and the Papas’ “Dream a Little Dream.” Even now we sometimes sing it together — and he’s a few months older than your elder daughter.

    • How wonderful! I also sang You Are My Sunshine, to my daughters while I was pregnant. Today, they have a-sort-of memory of me singing it! A bit like you and the boy-child’s song. That’s so sweet that you guys still sing “Dream a Little Dream” sometimes. 🙂

  2. I got you, Amanda. At the moment, I’m feeling like the place where I was born and grew up is not really my home. Of course, there’s always will to return, but it never be the same again.
