We had phone booths that closed in back of you like a bus door. In Florida, it could get hot inside one of those things. There were only a few expressways (freeways) and if your car stopped on one of the prevalent back roads , you had to walk to the nearest gas station or place of business to find one. If you didn’t have 10 cents to put into the coin slot, you could dial 0 for the operator in an emergency and she would direct you to the police — our you could reverse the charges so that the person you were calling would have to pay the bill.
Now that cell phones are everywhere, people forget that once upon a time we didn’t think twice about getting in a car, going down a lonely road and possibly getting stuck there until some nice stranger drove by.
Thanks so much for adding your memories to this post. Makes it much more complete 😀
